about

Guitar/Vocal Version. This track will be re-recorded before being added to the finished "Rockability" album. (It's rough, but has good energy.)

This song is pre-Nashville. In fact, for a while it fell out of favor WITH ME . . . I guess I thought it was too simple . . . silly me . . . simple is sometimes beautiful . . . especially in Rockabilly. Not a lot of clever "Nashville writing" in this one . . . good!

lyrics

I'VE GOT TO LEAVE

I don't know what I'm gonna tell her
as I'm walkin' out that door
Can't just say “Hey babe, it's over . . .
I don't love you anymore”
'Cause she used to be my woman
and I used to be her friend
I feel about as low now
as a man has ever been

But what we had before is over
I'm glad I got to know her
And I'll do my best to hold her
in my memories . . .
but I've got to leave

I wouldn't do her any favor
by tryin' to live a lie
I've got to do what's in my heart,
it's time to say good-bye
I don't know what to tell her,
I just can't make up the words
It doesn't matter what I say,
I know it's gonna hurt

But what we had before is over
I'm glad I got to know her
And I'll do my best to hold her
in my memories . . .
but I've got to leave

Well, I'd love to run and hide
But I know that that ain't right
I'll find what it takes
To tell her face to face

I still care about that woman
and I hate to make her cry
I wish I could explain
I wish that I could tell her why
But words lose all their meaning
when I try to let her know
I feel my feelings changing
and I know it's time to go

What we had before is over
I'm glad I got to know her
And I'll do my best to hold her
in my memories . . .

What we had before is over
I'm glad I got to know her
And I'll do my best to hold her
in my memories . . .
but I've got to leave
