BARKIN' WITH THE BIG DOGS A golden puppy chasin' butterflies across a yard full of dandelions Doesn't stop to wonder why It comes naturally He hears a howling from across the fence Calls back with a 'yelp' at best Doesn't know what he's up against But can't wait to be      Barkin' with the big dogs      Makin' noise with the boys next door      Talkin' that big talk      Mixin' it up, not a pup anymore      Barkin' with the big dogs Little Jimmy, he's a three-year-old Never seems to do like he's told He's not bad, he's got a need to know It's curiosity Through the window, hears the kids at play Wants to join 'em in their baseball game But mama's got him stayin' in today He can't wait to be      Barkin' with the big dogs      Makin' noise with the boys next door      Talkin' that big talk      Mixin' it up, not a pup anymore      Barkin' with the big dogs           Every puppy, every boy           Anyone with a dream           Gives it all they've got           and can't wait to be      Barkin' with the big dogs      Makin' noise with the boys next door      Talkin' that big talk      Mixin' it up, not a pup anymore      Barkin' with the big dogs Written by Steve Trinward and Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright trinSongs / Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)

FROSTBITE She's drivin' crazy, tryin' to get out of town It doesn't matter where she's goin' right now Steam on her windows, her blood's runnin' hot He was cold and heartless, never thought he'd get caught She's got frostbite His love was cold enough to burn One look into her icy eyes confirms She's got frostbite She's afraid of being touched Now that she's realized love can hurt so much Hunger stops her, she wipes the tears from her face Walks into the diner and pretends she's okay But when a stranger crosses the room She cuts him down, it's much too soon She's got frostbite His love was cold enough to burn One look into her icy eyes confirms She's got frostbite She's afraid of being touched Now that she's realized love can hurt so much Love is a fire you can't control And where there's smoke you'd think there's a flame But there's a cloud that comes from dry ice It looks familiar, but it's not the same She's got frostbite His love was cold enough to burn One look into her icy eyes confirms She's got frostbite She's afraid of being touched Now that she's realized love can hurt so much She's got frostbite She's got frostbite She's got frostbite Written by Jeffrey Scott Stewart and Pam O'Daniel Copyright Blue Clover Music / Pam O'Daniel

HELP YOURSELF TO ME I see the sadness of a lonely dreamer, it's something you can't hide You've done your best to be a true believer, but you're not satisfied Don't start thinking no-one understands Come on, take my hand If you can't help yourself, help yourself to me I think I know how you feel, once I was down on my knees Now I'm standing strong enough to help someone in need So if you can't help yourself, help yourself to me Anytime you need a friendly shoulder, you can lean on mine And if you ever think of starting over, I'll be by your side I'm with you no matter what it takes I've been in your place If you can't help yourself, help yourself to me I think I know how you feel, once I was down on my knees Now I'm standing strong enough to help someone in need So if you can't help yourself, If you can't help yourself, If you can't help yourself, help yourself to me Written by Allen Sostrin and Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright Universal-Songs of Polygram (BMI) / Seven Angels Music (BMI) / Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)

OUT OF THE QUESTION It's out of the question It's just too much to ask And I'm too broken hearted to pretend I'm too busy cryin' And living in the past Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend It seems like just yesterday we were in love You told me a million times back then That your love was strong So can you tell me what went wrong? Why can't we be that way again? It's out of the question It's just too much to ask And I'm too broken hearted to pretend I'm too busy cryin' And living in the past Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend I won't stay around and let you see me cry Wishing we could share just one more kiss I can't stay here Wondering how your feelings disappeared I'm too close to the tenderness I miss So I'll be movin' on I'd rather miss you when I'm gone Than stay and play a game of make believe Honey it hurts too much To be in reach, but out of touch So I will live with memories It's out of the question It's just too much to ask And I'm too broken hearted to pretend I'm too busy cryin' And living in the past Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend I can't be your friend . . . It's out of the question Written by Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)

SHADOW OF LOVE Moonlight casts a shadow through my window Traces of you dance around the room Reflections of the past, so clear I can't deny It's too soon for someone new I'm living in the shadow of love It follows me when I try to run Doesn't matter how far I've come I'm still living in the shadow of love I know she's lying here beside me But I can't touch her like I want to . . . The candle by the bed still burns in memory of You and only you I'm living in the shadow of love It follows me when I try to run Doesn't matter how far I've come I'm still living in the shadow of love Maybe someday you'll see the light If you come back, the sun will shine I'm living in the shadow of love It follows me when I try to run Doesn't matter how far I've come I'm still living in the shadow of love Living in the shadow of love Written by Jeffrey Scott Stewart and Pam O'Daniel Copyright Blue Clover Music (ASCAP) / Pam O'Daniel

YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME You'll be knockin' at my door But I won't answer I know You're gonna miss me when I'm gone You'll be callin' out my name But I won't be there I know You're gonna miss me when I'm gone You know that you've hurt me But you won't even try to treat me right You're gonna cry every day When I'm away Girl, if I leave You're gonna miss me When I'm gone You'll be lookin' for my love When you feel lonely I know You're gonna miss me when I'm gone You know that you've hurt me But you won't even try to treat me right You're gonna cry every day When I'm away Girl, if I leave You're gonna miss me When I'm gone You're gonna cry every day When I'm away Girl, if I leave You're gonna miss me When I'm gone Written by Gavin West and Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright Gavin West / Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)

SHOW ME WHERE IT HURTS I understand your hesitation It's hard for you to share right now Even though it's unspoken I know your heart's been broken And I want to chase away your doubts If love's a river of pure emotion You're like a dam about to burst You've tried to hide your pain And only made it worse I know I can make you feel better If you show me where it hurts I could learn by demonstration Teach me how to treat you right As long as we stay together Our love will last forever We'll get there, if you'll be my guide If love's a river of pure emotion You're like a dam about to burst You've tried to hide your pain And only made it worse I know I can make you feel better If you show me where it hurts You're only human I realize Heartaches take time to heal I'm just a man, and I'm asking you To let me know how you feel If love's a river of pure emotion You're like a dam about to burst You've tried to hide your pain And only made it worse I know I can make you feel better If you show me where it hurts I know I can make you feel better If you show me where it hurts Open up your heart Show me where it hurts Written by Allen Sostrin and Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)/Universal-Songs of Polygram(BMI)/Seven Angels Music (BMI)

TAKE YOUR MAMA Your taxi's waitin', your bags are packed You say you're leavin' and you ain't comin' back I'm down on my knees - I'm beggin' you If you're gonna leave me honey, take your mama too Take your mama Don't leave her behind Take your mama She drives me out of my mind Take your mama When you leave, take your mama too She showed up at our doorstep, suitcase in hand Wearin' her robe and slippers, and her polyester pants You said she'd only stay for a week or so But Baby, that's been eleven months ago Take your mama Don't leave her behind Take your mama She drives me out of my mind Take your mama When you leave, take your mama too Well she lays around on my couch all day Drinkin' beer and eatin' up my take home pay Watchin' her soaps on that old boob tube I can't even live in my own livin' room Take your mama Don't leave her behind Take your mama She drives me out of my mind Take your mama When you leave, take your mama too Written by Dave Trout and Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright Dave Trout / Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)

CHEROKEE BLOOD Cherokee blood flowed like water in a red colored stream As I watched my brother dying at my feet I had heard the soldier's rifle as he gunned the young brave down Now I knew a life was ended at the sound The soldier said, Injuns deserve to die, they have no fear of God I saw those savage eyes, just before I shot There ought to be a price paid for every drop of Cherokee Blood I was proud of my people - We'd made peace with the whites Now I vowed not to die there without a fight Not afraid to die, I had no fear of God I saw the soldier's eyes just before he shot There ought to be a price paid for every drop of Cherokee Blood I live on as a spirit in the heart of every brave I live through my children's children - in their veins Written by Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)

WHEN THE TWISTER TOUCHED DOWN If I could paint a picture of what I saw, it would all be black and white She was waiting in the stillness with a storm behind her eyes If I had heard a warning, I would have tried to change the way she felt But she was hiding her emotions, then like a train straight out of hell When the twister touched down The birds stopped singing And I wished that I could fly But I could only run for shelter And there was no place left to hide As our love came unwound - When the twister touched down I still have scars from when she left me, but I've come to realize How the words that went unspoken grew clouded in her mind She was angry, she was restless, and the winds began to blow Until she finally had to let loose, and the twister broke up our home When the twister touched down The birds stopped singing And I wished that I could fly But I could only run for shelter And there was no place left to hide As our love came unwound - When the twister touched down I guess she held it all inside as long as she could And in her silence I believed - and misunderstood But when the twister touched down The birds stopped singing And I wished that I could fly I could only run for shelter And there was no place left to hide As our love came unwound - When the twister touched down When the twister touched down Written by Jeffrey Scott Stewart and Pam O'Daniel Copyright Blue Clover Music / Pam O'Daniel

PULL OVER This goes out to the black-haired lady in the dark blue Ford stepside Westbound I-40 in the fast lane, twenty miles from the Jackson line Michael's callin' on his cellphone, to get this message to you So if you're listenin', he's the red Mustang, smilin' in your rearview Sounds like you've got a love thing there Hold on, I'll put Michael on the air Pull over at the next truck stop I'll buy the coffee, I'd sure like to talk Pull over, I like the way you smiled at me There's no tellin' where this might lead So if you'd like to meet, pull over It's three twenty on your drive-time station, our Romeo is still on the line He'd like to make a dedication to the lady in the Ford stepside It's John Michael Montgomery singin' "Life's a Dance" If you want to, give him a sign, if not, he'll understand If I were you I'd give him a try He sounds like a real nice guy Pull over at the next truck stop I'll buy the coffee, I'd sure like to talk Pull over, I like the way you smiled at me There's no tellin' where this might lead So if you'd like to meet, pull over Wait a minute let's go to line two There's a lady with a message for you I'll pull over at the next truck stop If you'll buy coffee, I'd sure like to talk I'll pull over, I like the way you smiled at me There's no tellin' where this might lead Yes, I'd like to meet, pull over Written by Jeffrey Scott Stewart and Steve Trinward Copyright Blue Clover Music (ASCAP) / trinSongs

IF I KNEW AN ANGEL I know the difference But I don't always do what's right I've made choices And I've made some bad ones in my life I regret Some things that I did yesterday I'm not proud But I know that I could change If I knew an angel If I knew an angel If I knew an angel like you Could love a man like me I've had lessons And I have scars that you could find I've felt cheated And tried to hold the hands of time Now I'm wiser And there are some things I understand That just make me older But I'd be a brand new man If I knew an angel If I knew an angel If I knew an angel like you Could love a man like me If I knew an angel If I knew an angel If I knew an angel like you Could love a man like me If I knew an angel like you Could love a man like me Written by Jeffrey Scott Stewart Copyright Blue Clover Music (ASCAP)

about

I dedicate this album to the talented musicians I've had the pleasure of working with . . . the members of my backing band, The Big Dogs . . .

From September 8, 1996 through September 11, 1998 we performed around the Nashville area at places like The 16th Avenue Cafe, The Courtyard Cafe, The Broken Spoke, The Boardwalk Cafe, Henry's Coffeehouse, The Bluebird Cafe, The Gibson Cafe, The Music City Cafe, Douglas Corner, and special events like The Tennessee State Fair and "Barkin' In the Park" (at Centennial Park). This album is a time capsule of that period of performances.

Most of our shows were recorded on cassette, using the PA system. Although, per Murphy's Law of course, it seems like our best performances weren't recorded at all (through one snafu or another), while most every screw-up did make it to tape. Still, from these crude tapes, I searched to find these performances. I'm proud of these songs (a tip of the hat to my co-writers), and I'm thankful to the people who helped me bring them to life . . . ladies and gentlemen . . . The Big Dogs!

This is Live Dogs . . .
